A stock exchange is a market where stocks (pieces of ownership in businesses) are traded between investors. This market allows businesses to raise money by selling stocks to investors, who hope to profit by selling the stocks later at a higher price. The stock exchange also provides a place for investors to buy and sell stocks.

Since the market exists in different time zones, their opening and closing time varies from place to place. This article briefly describes the stock exchanges and their trading hours.

New York Stock Exchange (NYSE)

The New York Stock Exchange is the world’s oldest and largest stock exchange. Founded in 1792, NYSE has a market cap of more than 26 trillion dollars. According to the data of 2022, the New York Stock Exchange has listed 2578 companies.

The market trading hours of NYSE open at 2:30 pm GMT and close at 9:00 pm GMT. There is no lunch break in between trading hours.

NASDAQ Stock Exchange

The NASDAQ is an American stock exchange based in New York City. It is one of two leading securities exchanges in the United States (along with the NYSE). The NASDAQ has a market capitalization of 19.4 trillion dollars and has listed 3625 companies.

The market trading hours of NASDAQ open at 2:30 pm GMT and close at 9:00 pm GMT. There is no lunch break between trading hours.

Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX)

The TSX is established in Toronto, Canada. By market capitalization of more than 3 trillion dollars, it is the biggest exchange in Canada and one of the largest in North America. The TSX is located inside the Exchange tower at 130 King Street West.

The market trading hours of TSX open at 2:30 pm GMT and close at 9:00 pm GMT. There is no lunch break at TSX.

Shanghai Stock Exchange

Founded in 1990, the SSE is one of the largest stock exchanges in the world after the NYSE, NASDAQ, and Tokyo Stock Exchange. It has a market capitalization of nearly 8 trillion dollars. Its headquarter exists in Shanghai Zhuyuan district, 528 Pudong South Road.

The first market trading hours of SSE open at 3:30 pm GMT and close at 5:30 pm GMT. 

The second trading market hours of SSE open at 7:00 pm GMT and close at 9:00 pm GMT. 

The lunch break is from 5:30 pm GMT to 7:00 pm GMT

Tokyo Stock Exchange

The TSE is the largest securities exchange in Japan. With a market capitalization of over US$5 trillion, it ranks as the third largest stock exchange in the world by asset size. Tokyo stock exchange is located at 2-1 Nihonbashi-Kabutocho, Chuo, Tokyo.

The first market trading hours of TSE open at 12:00 am GMT and closes at 2:30 am GMT. 

The second market trading hours of TSE open at 3:30 am GMT and close at 6:00 am GMT. 

The lunch break is from 2:30 am GMT to 5:30 am GMT

Shenzhen Stock Exchange (SZSE)

The SZSE is a stock exchange located in Shenzhen, China, since 1987. After the Shanghai Stock Exchange, it is one of China’s second stock exchanges. The SZSE has a market cap of 5.24 trillion dollars with 2375 listed companies. The Shenzhen Stock Exchange is located at 2012 Shennan Blvd, Futian District, Shenzhen.

The first market trading hours of SZSE open at 3:30 pm GMT and closes at 5:30 pm GMT. 

The second market trading hours of SZSE open at 7:00 pm GMT and close at 8:57 pm GMT. 

The lunch break is from 5:30 pm GMT to 7:00 pm GMT

Stock Exchange of Hong Kong (HKEX)

The HKEX is a unified stock exchange of Hong Kong merged from three exchanges: Kowloon, Kam Ngan, and Far east. With over 2538 listed companies, it has a market cap of 45 billion dollars. It is located at Two Exchange Square, 8 Connaught Place, Central, Beijing.

The first market trading hours of SEHK open at 1:30 am GMT and close at 4:00 am GMT. 

The second market trading hours of SEHK open at 5:00 am GMT and closes at 8:00 am GMT. 

The lunch break is from 4:00 am GMT to 5:00 am GMT

National Stock Exchange of India (NSE)

The NSE is the largest stock exchange in India by market capitalization. It is located in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The NSE has around 1,400 listed companies across India, including some of its biggest businesses like Tata Group, Adani Group, Wipro Ltd., Hindustan Unilever Ltd., Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., and many more.

The market trading hours of NSE open at 6:45 am GMT and close at 1:00 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in NSE. 

Saudi Stock Exchange

The SSE, or the Tadawul, is the largest stock exchange in the Middle East. It was established by royal decree on 19 March 2007. The Saudi Stock Exchange has a market capitalization of $2 trillion and a combined trading value of $1 trillion.

The market trading hours of Tadawul open at 2:00 pm GMT and close at 7:00 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in Saudi Stock Exchange. 

BSE Limited

The first stock exchange in India was the Bombay Stock Exchange, which today is known as BSE Limited. It was established in 1875 on Dalal street, Mumbai, India. Considered as the 8th largest stock exchange, BSE Limited has listed 5246 companies and more than 3 trillion market cap in 2022.

The market trading hours of BSE Limited open at 6:45 am GMT and close at 1:00 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in BSE Limited. 

Korea Exchange (KRX)

Korea Exchange is the only stock exchange in South Korea. Founded in 1956, Korea Exchange was unified by merging KSE, KOSDAQ, and Korea Futures Exchange. KRX has a market capitalization of $1,402 billion USD as of September 2022 and 2445 listed companies. It is located at 76, Yeouinaru-ro, Yeongdeungpo-gu.

The market trading hours of KRX open at 12:00 am GMT and close at 6:30 am GMT. 

There is no lunch break in KRX. 

Taiwan Stock Exchange (TWSE)

With 809 listed companies, TWSE has been the only stock exchange in Taiwan since 1961. The market capitalization of TWSE is 1320 billion dollars, and it has listed 809 companies. It is located at Xinyi Rd., Taipei City 11049, Taiwan.

The market trading hours of TWSE Limited open at 3:15 pm GMT and close at 7:30 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in TWSE.

Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE)

With a market cap of 26 billion dollars, NEPSE is the single stock exchange of Nepal. However, the government has planned another stock exchange in the next five years. Established in 1994, NEPSE consist of 190 companies. It is located at Singha Durbar road, Kathmandu.

The market trading hours of NEPSE open at 5:15 am GMT and close at 9:15 am GMT. 

There is no lunch break in NEPSE.

London Stock Exchange

The LSE is one of the world’s largest stock exchanges. It is a member of the World Federation of Exchanges and the Federation of European Securities Exchanges. Founded in 1981, London Stock Exchange has a market cap of 3.57 trillion dollars. It is located at Paternoster Square, London.

The first market trading hours of the London Stock Exchange open at 8:00 am GMT and close at 12:00 pm GMT. 

The second market trading hours of the London Stock Exchange opens at 12:02 pm GMT and closes at 4:30 pm GMT. 

The lunch break is from 12:00 pm GMT to 12:02 pm GMT

Frankfurt Stock Exchange

Created in 1585, more than 400 years ago, FSE is another largest stock exchanges in Germany. The Frankfurt Stock Exchange, also known as the Börse Frankfurt, has a market capitalization of 2.21 trillion as of 2021. It is located at Bankenviertel.

The market trading hours of Frankfurt Stock Exchange Limited open at 8:00 am GMT and close at 4:30 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break at Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

SIX Swiss Exchange

The SIX Swiss Exchange is the national stock exchange of Switzerland. It was founded in 1850 in Geneva. Considered the third largest exchange in Europe, SIX has a market cap of 2 trillion dollars with 248 listed companies. It’s located in Zurich, Switzerland.

The market trading hours of the SIX Swiss Exchange open at 8:00 am GMT and closes at 4:20 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in the SIX Swiss Exchange.

Euronext Amsterdam

Euronext Amsterdam is the largest stock exchange in the Netherlands. It’s also the leading European exchange with a market cap of 4 trillion dollars. It is also the oldest exchange, renamed from Amsterdam Stock Exchange.

The market trading hours of Euronext Amsterdam open at 8:00 am GMT and close at 4:30 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in Euronext Amsterdam.

Nasdaq Stockholm

Established in 1863, Nasdaq Stockholm has listed more than 800 companies. The exchange’s old name was Stockholm Stock Exchange. The market cap of Nasdaq Stockholm is more than 1.3 trillion dollars.

The market trading hours of Nasdaq Stockholm AB open at 8:00 am GMT and close at 4:25 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in Nasdaq Stockholm AB.

B3 SA Brasil Bolsa Balcao

B3 SA is a stock exchange in Brazil. Founded in 1890, B3 has a market capitalization of 15 billion dollars. According to the data for 2021, B3 has listed 418 companies.

The market trading hours of B3 SA Brasil Bolsa Balcao open at 1:00 pm GMT and close at 8:55 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in B3 SA.

Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)

Located in Africa, JSE is one of the oldest and biggest exchanges, with a market cap of over 1.3 trillion dollars. Johannesburg Stock Exchange was founded in 1887 and has listed 473 companies till now.

The market trading hours of JSE open at 7:00 am GMT and close at 3:00 pm GMT. 

There is no lunch break in JSE.

Australian Securities Exchange (ASX)

The ASX is a stock exchange in Australia. Established in 1987, ASX has a market capitalization of 2 .3 trillion Australian dollars. There are more than 275 listed companies.

The market trading hours of the Australian Securities Exchange open at 11:00 pm GMT and close at 5:00 am GMT. 

There is no lunch break in ASX.
